Faith Keeps Me Going: Kamilah’s Breast Cancer Journey

"With or without the disease, life still goes on. Just pray that life will be easier, so life goes on.”

A Sudden Turn

In March 2024, life changed overnight for 41-year-old Kamilah. What started as a period of uncertainty and discomfort led to a life-changing diagnosis: late-stage breast cancer. Scans revealed multiple tumours throughout her body; an unseen battle was unfolding within.

News like that would be overwhelming for anyone. But Kamilah took a different path — one rooted not in fear, but in faith. Instead of asking “Why me?”, she asked, “How do I move forward from here?”

Kamilah’s journey isn’t just about the illness anymore — it’s about finding meaning, strength, and a sense of self again. With people who truly see and support her, she’s healing in more ways than one.

The Circle That Holds Her

Kamilah holds close the laughter and love of her niece and nephew — a reminder of what truly matters.

Kamilah used to live with the steady routine of her work in the laboratory, where everything followed a clear structure. But her cancer diagnosis changed all of that, bringing uncertainty and constant change into her life.

Instead of fighting against it, Kamilah chose to lean into a slower, more intentional way of living. These days, she spends quiet hours at home — resting, reflecting, and nurturing what truly matters: her faith, her family, and her closest friends.

Her days are no longer packed, but purposeful. Kamilah starts many mornings in quiet prayer and ends her afternoons in stillness, surrounded by love. She’s found a sense of peace in this slower pace — a grace that helps carry her through the difficult moments.

Faith as Her Foundation

faith as muslim

A symbol of light and guidance — reflecting the faith that anchors Kamilah through every storm.

At the heart of Kamilah’s journey is her unwavering faith as a Muslim. It is her refuge when the fear creeps in and her strength when the treatments weigh her down. When asked what keeps her going, she doesn’t hesitate:

“I don’t need to pay attention to this life so much,” she says calmly, “because I can focus on the afterlife. That’s where peace is.”

In her hardest moments — when the pain flares or fatigue takes over — Kamilah turns to a dua for ease in all matters. It is a simple, powerful prayer that helps her stay calm and steady:

“Rabbi Yassir Wala Tu’assir Wa Tammim Bil Khair.”
“Oh Allah, make this task easy and do not make it difficult. Oh Allah, make it end well.”

These words are more than comfort — they’re a compass. She also finds deep strength in reading the Qur’an, reminding herself that her struggle is a test from God, and one that she intends to face with strength, patience, and grace.

Hope Beyond the Pain

Despite the advanced stage of her cancer, Kamilah carries herself with a remarkable sense of hope and calm. She doesn’t let her illness define her. Instead, she reminds those around her — gently and sincerely — that there’s still beauty in life, even in the hardest moments.

“I believe there’s goodness even in this,” she says.
“It helps me stay positive.”

This positivity isn’t about pretending the pain doesn’t exist. It’s about acknowledging it, making space for it, and then choosing to rise anyway.

A Message from the Heart

Kamilah’s message to others — whether or not they are battling illness — is one of grounded hope:

“With or without the disease, life still goes on. Just pray that life will be easier, so life goes on.”

Kamilah trusts that life, even when uncertain, is still full of meaning. Trust that comfort and struggle can exist together — and that faith can gently hold what feels too heavy to carry alone. She isn’t defined by her diagnosis, but by the strength with which she continues to show up for herself, for the people she loves, and for the faith that gives her strength.
