Dr Akhil Chopra is a Senior Consultant Medical Oncologist at OncoCare Cancer Centre, Singapore, with over two decades of clinical experience in the comprehensive management of cancer. His expertise spans a wide spectrum of malignancies, including lung, head, neck, genitourinary (prostate, kidney, and bladder), breast, and gastrointestinal cancers, as well as lymphomas and multiple myeloma. His approach integrates evidence-based and personalised care tailored to each patient’s unique clinical context.
Dr Chopra graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Delhi in 2001. He subsequently trained in the United States, completing his residency and fellowship at Hahnemann University Hospital and Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. He is American Board-certified in Internal Medicine, Haematology, and Medical Oncology. Prior to joining OncoCare, Dr Chopra served as a Senior Consultant in Medical Oncology at Johns Hopkins Singapore and Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He also held an academic appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, where he was actively involved in mentoring medical students and residents. In addition, he was the founding Program Director of the National Healthcare Group Medical Oncology Training Program from 2012 to 2017, playing a key role in the development of oncology training in Singapore.
At OncoCare, Dr Chopra brings broad international experience and a strong focus on multidisciplinary cancer care. He has a particular interest in immunotherapy and systemic treatment strategies across tumour types. His clinical insights have been featured in major media platforms, including The Straits Times and Channel News Asia, reflecting his commitment to public education in cancer awareness.
Dr Chopra has been actively involved in clinical trials and cancer research, serving as both principal and co-investigator in numerous industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated studies. His research focuses on immunotherapy in solid tumours, and he has contributed to several landmark publications.
He is a co-author of the CheckMate 040 trial (nivolumab in hepatocellular carcinoma), published in The Lancet, and an international phase II study of nivolumab in nasopharyngeal carcinoma published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. He has also contributed to studies in lung, prostate, and kidney cancers, with publications in high-impact journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Oncology, and Lung Cancer.
He is a member of leading professional organisations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), Academy of Medicine Singapore, and the Singapore Society of Oncology
Dr Chopra is fluent in English and Hindi, and proficient in Punjabi. He regularly cares for both local and international patients from across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America.
