Medical Tourists: 5 Things You Need to Know Before Coming to Singapore

Singapore is renowned for its world-class healthcare, making it one of the top choices for international patients seeking advanced treatments, including for cancer, or second opinions.

At OncoCare Cancer Centre, we understand that traveling for medical care goes beyond just receiving treatment. It’s about ensuring a seamless and comfortable experience for both patients and their families. That’s why we’ve created this guide to help international patients with their medical journey to Singapore with ease.

1. Easy VISA Application: Your Arrival to Singapore

Before booking your flight, check your VISA requirements. For the VISA application, do check out the information from Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA).

Pro Tip: Save digital copies or print out physical copies of your passport, VISA, and medical documents for quick access.

2. Transportation: From Changi Airport to Your Destination

Here’s how to reach your accommodation or a medical centre from Singapore’s Changi Airport:

  • Airport Transfers: Pre-arrange an airport transfer service to take you to your accommodation or medical centre. Many private companies and hotel services offer this option.
  • Taxis and Ride-Hailing Services: Taxis are available at the arrival hall, but ride-hailing apps like Grab, TADA, and Gojek are also excellent alternatives. Note that fares can surge during peak hours (weekday mornings and evenings).Additionally, ride-hailing pick-up points at Changi Airport vary by service and terminal, so be sure to check your designated pick-up location. For Grab, the specific pick-up points for international arrivals are as follows:
    • Terminal 1: Door 3, Basement 1 Pick-up
    • Terminal 2: Door 7, Arrival Pick-up Zone
    • Terminal 3: Door 5, Arrival Pick-up Zone
    • Terminal 4: Door 1, Arrival Pick-up Zone

For more details, check Grab’s airport ride guide. Ask the customer service concierge or airport staff for assistance if in doubt.

  • Public Transport: Singapore’s MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) and buses are affordable and reliable. Foreign-issued MasterCard or Visa cards with contactless functionality can be used for fare payments directly at MRT gates and bus readers. A nominal administrative fee of SGD 0.60/day applies. Alternatively, purchase an EZ-Link card or the Singapore Tourist Pass for unlimited travel. For details, visit SimplyGo.

Pro Tip: If mobility is a concern, request wheelchair-accessible transport options.

3. Accommodation Options: Your Home Away from Home

Choosing the right accommodation allows a stress-free medical journey. For convenience, it’s recommended to book accommodations such as hotels or service apartments near hospital or medical centres you are visiting.

OncoCare Cancer Centre is conveniently located at Mount Alvernia, Gleneagles, Mount Elizabeth Novena, and Mount Elizabeth Orchard. Staying near these areas ensures you’re just a short ride away from your appointments.

  • Nearest MRT Stations:
    • Mount Alvernia: Marymount MRT (Circle Line).
    • Gleneagles: Napier MRT (Thomson-East Coast Line).
    • Mount Elizabeth Novena: Novena MRT (North-South Line).
    • Mount Elizabeth Orchard: Orchard MRT (North-South Line).
  • Nearest Bus Stops: Each medical centre is well-connected by bus services, making public transport a convenient and affordable option for commuting. Bus stops are strategically located near major medical centres, ensuring ease of access for patients and visitors.

To plan your journey, you can use apps like Google Maps or the Singapore bus apps to check real-time arrival schedules and identify the best routes. If you’re unfamiliar with an area, look for bus stop codes or refer to transit maps at the bus stop. Be sure to have a contactless payment card (like Mastercard or Visa) or an EZ-Link card for seamless boarding.

Pro Tip: Download the “MyTransport Singapore” app or use TransitLink’s Journey Planner to get detailed information on bus routes and schedules for your preferred medical centre.

4. Lifestyle Tips for Families: Exploring Singapore While Supporting You

While you focus on recovery, you and your family can unwind and explore the city at these places:

  • Local Eats: Hawker centres like Lau Pa Sat, Maxwell Food Centre and Newton Food Centre offer affordable and delicious local cuisines. Don’t miss the chicken rice, seafood and laksa. Do check with your doctor on your dietary restrictions.
